Zavkhan lies in western Mongolia between the Khangai Mountains, the Great Lakes Depression, and the dry basins leading toward the Altai.

Zavkhan is a province of sacred mountains, cold rivers, sand-edged lakes, open steppe, and high pasture. Otgontenger Mountain, Khar Nuur, Ulaagchinii Khar Nuur, the Ider and Zavkhan river systems, and broad dune-and-lake landscapes give it a quiet but powerful beauty.

Uliastai was an important military and administrative center during the Qing period, serving as a western hub before the modern provincial system. The province was formally established in 1931 and retains a strong sense of historical depth and regional pride.

Zavkhan is known for Buddhist devotion, literary and musical traditions, horse culture, and pastoral life in both mountain and steppe settings. Otgontenger is especially sacred, and local customs emphasize respect for mountains, springs, and pilgrimage routes.

Livestock herding, cashmere, meat, dairy, small agriculture, public services, local trade, and limited mining activity support the economy. Remoteness and difficult roads make transport a major factor in everyday life.

Otgontenger Mountain, Khar Nuur, Ulaagchinii Khar Nuur, Uliastai's historical setting, river valleys, and remote dune-and-lake camps are the main attractions. Zavkhan appeals to travelers who prefer solitude, pilgrimage landscapes, and long-distance overland routes.

The best travel window is June to September, when mountain roads are more reliable and lakes are accessible. Respect local restrictions around sacred mountains, and plan fuel and food carefully because services can be far apart outside Uliastai.

Otgontenger is one of Mongolia's most revered mountains and is traditionally approached with strict local protocols. Zavkhan's lakes often appear suddenly after long stretches of dry steppe, creating some of western Mongolia's most memorable visual contrasts.

Zavkhan is notable for sacred highland geography, historical Uliastai, and a restrained western beauty that rewards deliberate travel.
