Zavkhan

Zavkhan is a province of sacred mountains, cold rivers, sand-edged lakes, open steppe, and high pasture. Otgontenger Mountain, Khar Nuur, Ulaagchinii Khar Nuur, the Ider and Zavkhan river systems, and broad dune-and-lake landscapes give it a quiet but powerful beauty.

Otgontenger Mountain, Khar Nuur, Ulaagchinii Khar Nuur, Uliastai's historical setting, river valleys, and remote dune-and-lake camps are the main attractions. Zavkhan appeals to travelers who prefer solitude, pilgrimage landscapes, and long-distance overland routes.

The best travel window is June to September, when mountain roads are more reliable and lakes are accessible. Respect local restrictions around sacred mountains, and plan fuel and food carefully because services can be far apart outside Uliastai.
