Dornogovi lies in southeastern Mongolia along the main rail and road corridor from Ulaanbaatar toward China.

The province is a classic eastern Gobi landscape of gravel plains, low ridges, dry valleys, saxaul patches, and big skies. Ikh Nart Nature Reserve adds rocky habitat for argali sheep and ibex, while the desert climate gives the region sharp seasonal contrasts.

Dornogovi was established in 1931 and grew in importance with the railway and the development of Sainshand. Its cultural history is strongly associated with the nineteenth-century monk, poet, educator, and artist Danzanravjaa, whose Khamaryn Khiid monastery remains the province's spiritual landmark.

Gobi Buddhism, camel-herding customs, ovoo rituals, and the legacy of Danzanravjaa shape local identity. Pilgrimage to Khamaryn Khiid and the nearby meditation landscapes gives the province a spiritual atmosphere unusual for a transport corridor.

Rail logistics, mining, construction, energy projects, livestock herding, and border-oriented trade are major economic activities. Sainshand's position on the Trans-Mongolian Railway gives it strategic importance for freight and passenger movement.

Khamaryn Khiid, the Shambhala meditation area, the Danzanravjaa Museum, Ikh Nart Nature Reserve, and desert railway landscapes are the main attractions. The province is also popular with travelers who want a Gobi experience without going as far as Ömnögovi.

Sainshand is one of the easiest Gobi destinations to reach by train from Ulaanbaatar. Spring can be windy, summer can be extremely hot, and autumn often offers the most comfortable combination of clear weather and manageable temperatures.

Danzanravjaa's artistic and religious legacy gives Dornogovi an unusually rich cultural profile for a sparsely populated desert province. The railway has made Sainshand a gateway where pilgrims, miners, traders, and tourists pass through the same station.

Dornogovi is notable for combining accessible Gobi scenery with one of Mongolia's most distinctive spiritual and literary traditions.
